Hurrah for traditions

It has become a bit of a tradition that every January Miikka comes over for a ‘working holiday’ of sorts, mostly consisting of some jobs that need doing around the house, drinking beer (him), ignoring emails (me), and catching up with the previous season of True Blood. He just flew back home today and the house already feels a bit empty without the regular sound of a bag of crisps being ripped open. Oh well, next year will come around soon enough, in fact, it seems like it comes around quicker and quicker the older we get…

Award-winning…

So it happened that I won an award for doing my job. How weird is that? I wrote a bit more about the whole thing over at MTP, if you’re interested in my pre-gala jitters.

What I enjoyed most about the day was getting ready for the do with the lovely Emma.

Christmas of ups and downs

Christmas was all about ups and downs. Mum and Pauli were over and there was presents galore. But Stu’s nan went into hospital the day before Christmas, which was a bit of a shock to the system. So it was all about balancing the good with the bad and sorting out logistics between us and Essex. There were some Christmassy moments to be had though, especially in the run up to the actual celebrations.

First time in Birmingham

For Stu’s birthday this year I really splashed out and took him up to Birmingham. No, but really, it was all good. We stayed at a cool hotel with an amazing view (apparently of the ‘Aids tower’), got to see Emma perform in The Lost Happy Endings (she was amazing) and spend some quality time with her, Pete and Jo. Definitely a brilliant trip. And Stu even got to see Ikea Birmingman on his birthday, how lucky is he.

Birthday picnic

I had the most amazing birthday picnic to celebrate my 35th. So much fun was had. Steph arranged the prettiest flowers, everyone brought food (Emma even baked her first ever cake, well, brownies, for me!), and I received lots of amazing presents and pretty cards + so much bubbly that it’s going to take quite a while to get through it all. What a lovely, lovely day!

Finland in the summer

I had a few days off in Finland around shooting a Finnish wedding for a change. We got to spend some time at Miikka’s cabin, which was long overdue. I also got to hang out with Ed, who was also in Finland for a wedding, and show him places from my youth. Good times.

Visitor from overseas

At the start of July Johanna had a gig shooting the Hampton Court Flower Show for a magazine, which was pretty perfect as it meant spending a few days of quality time together. We made the most of just sitting out in the garden, listening to music and reading magazines. Pure bliss.

How time flies…

This is one of those things that makes one feel terribly old… It had clearly been waaaaay too long since I’d seen Noa & Elli, as they are practially all grown up now! It seems like just a few winks ago that Elli was just a few months old. Crazy. But still, was so lovely seeing them, and Riina, it was a lucky thing I had a wedding just around the corner!

A quick portrait exchange

Just a few quick portraits of a friend and fellow photographer Matt Tyler. We both needed shots for magazine articles (me for this interview for Photo Professional), so decided to shoot each other and make it as painless as possible. Oh how horrid it is being on the other side of the camera…

Working holiday

Miikka was over for his traditional ‘working holiday’. There was a lot of drilling and laying of floors involved, but we did manage to squeeze in some culture at Hampton Court Palace and two seasons of True Blood. Not bad going.

Hey I’m alive!

Phew, what a week it’s been. Getting the magazine to press in the day job, and getting ready for Saturday’s wedding in the ‘evening job’ has certainly taken it’s toll this week. Oh and I’ve also been working on setting up the client-side of my website, with the help of the indispensable Paul. On Tuesday I went to check out the venue for tomorrow’s wedding, and yesterday I finally met up with the couple. It was slightly nerve wracking not having met the clients until two days before the big day, but luckily it turned out that they’re all-round lovely people.

Running around all over town has meant that I have had zero time for housework and the flat is an absolute mess, which kind of adds to the stress of everything. Hopefully, unless I’m completely dead, I can do something about that on Sunday. S is off to Ireland on Sunday for two weeks with work. It’ll be strange having an empty house for that long…

Despite being tired and stressed I’m really looking forward to Saturday. It’s great to finally start shooting these weddings that have been in the pipelines for so long. It’s actually the enjoyable side of running the business, unlike all the admin work that’s been piling up recently.

It’s Layla’s birthday on Sunday (I know this since she’s been reminding me every day for the last month), and today we went out for a celebratory lunch in Nando’s in her honor. It was only my second time in Nando’s ever, and it wasn’t half bad. Even if my food took forever to arrive and I then had to practically run back to the office as my lunch hour was up. Oh well.

I’m taking a couple of days off work next week (thank god for April and the start of new holiday year) in order to process tomorrow’s wedding and partly to avoid all the G20 hoopla. I just have no energy for any extra commuting disruptions.

But yeah, I’m alive, just a bit snowed under!

Hellos & goodbyes

Paul came over from Ireland for a quick visit. We had fish & chips, went shopping in Kingston, saw Vicky Cristina Barcelona, and learned about the importance of truth. Good times.

Christmas roundup

Christmas kicked off on Christmas Eve when we celebrated Finnish xmas at home with S. It was such a treat to be able to watch Santa’s Hotline via the miracle of the interwebs. For my generation of Finns listening to little kids phoning Santa, trying to impress him at the last minute, and make sure he’ll find the right address, is a pretty integral part of getting xmas started. And of course then there’s The Snowman, a true sign that yet another year has passed and Christmas is here.

In a fairly non-traditional fashion, I had pancakes and hot chocolate for breakfast.

On Christmas Day we headed to Essex for the English onslaught of xmas traditions. This lasted for two days, and included two different turkeys.

Such happy Christmassy faces… :D

Certain someone got an air drums set for Christmas. Much hilarity ensued.

And finally, here’s my loot. I must have been a fairly good girl this year!

The day that wasn’t

Uhh it was ghastly to go back to work just when you had sort of slipped into that Christmassy state of being. To ease the pain we went for a nice pub lunch with Layla. Made it all seem a bit more bearable.

Now finally the holiday stretches in front of me. I have waited for this moment for so long. I hope it doesn’t go by in a flash!
