End of the year survey re:2009

1. What did you do in 2009 that you'd never done before?
Cruised on the Thames twice (even if it was for work, still cool).

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
My resolution for 2009 was to 'remember to see the big picture and keep working towards goals that might not be clearly in view just yet'. I think I did do that. It has been damn hard, feeling almost impossible at times, but I think I can finally see the light at the end of the tunnel. For 2010 my resolution could be to have the strength push towards taking the final steps into a more emancipated way of living, and once you get there, remember to enjoy what you've achieved, but never stop working towards being better/happier/closer to where you want to be.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Well, he probably didn't give birth per say, but Ride became a father in December.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No. For which I'm grateful for. I don't think I could have handled that sort of things this year.

5. What countries did you visit?
France, Switzerland and Finland.

6. What would you like to have in 2010 that you lacked in 2009?
A HOLIDAY. One that lasted more than 2 days.

7. What date from 2009 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I don't know the exact date, the whole year is pretty blurry on dates. But there was one specific moment when it really hit me that hey, I'm a professional photographer - people pay me to take their picture. I know it sounds simple, but it's a pretty profound shift inside.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Taking my business to the level it is at now in such a short space of time. There's nothing big headed about that statement, I have worked fricking hard for it and I am proud of myself for it.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Sometimes losing sight of the goals and sinking into a funk. Not having time for anyone, least of all my loved ones or myself.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Funnily enough, I've been pretty ok this year. I've only gotten ill on the few days that I've had off. I guess the body sort of 'gets with the program' when it realises there are no other options but to push through and live on pure adrenalin. Probably can't go on forever though.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
My tilt shift lens, hands down. Plus quite a lot of other photography-related things.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Susanna has proven to be an absolute star this year. Both on professional and personal front.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

There are some people that have disappointed me... by getting annoyed that I haven't been in touch (through lack of time), or by dropping all communication whatsoever. Phone lines for example work in both directions.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Camera gear.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Booking a shedload of exciting weddings.

16. What songs will always remind you of 2009?
Kings of Leon - Closer.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Both.
ii. thinner or fatter? Fatter.
iii. richer or poorer? Richer.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Sleeping, socialising, relaxing, loving life, exercising.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Worrying.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

Christmas Eve at home with Stu. Christmas Day and Boxing Day with Stu's family.

21. How did you spend New Years?
Sitting in a sauna in very snowy Finland.

22. Did you fall in love in 2009?
In some ways.

23. How many one night stands?
0.

24. What were your favourite TV programmes?

True Blood, err... nothing else comes to mind.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Hate is a strong word, but certainly dislike.

26. What was the best book you read?
Hmm, maybe Audrey Niffenegger - The Time Traveler's Wife.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Crikey... haven't had much time for that. Damien Jurado, Citizen Cope, Tiny Vipers... oh and Kings of Leon, as I'm always late to the party. :P

28. What did you want and get?
To make a success of my business.

29. What did you want and not get?
To find and buy a flat.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Burn After Reading (although this was probably released in 2008).

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Shot Eleni & David's wedding. I turned 33. Jaysus.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not having two full time jobs...

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2009?
A complete meltdown.

34. What kept you sane?
Self belief.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Colin. (And also Robert Pattinson... just a little bit. Sorry Colin)

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Stirred? None.

37. Who did you miss?
Everyone.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

So many lovely clients, some of whom have become friends.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2009.
You can do things you never thought capable of when you put your mind to it.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Not now but soon,
The most beautiful light
Will wake us to pillow fighting excitement

Not now but soon,
Bright into
Every corner,
Satellites manoeuvre in beams of change,

Standing by the best days of our lives,
Magnificent, the best days of our lives,
Big bang boom, the best days of our lives
They’re coming right up
If we can just get through this one.

Who said it was over?
It’s as good as it gets
Well we’ve got a few tricks up our sleeves yet

If we swallow "it’s all over" and open wide on these make-to-believe
Sullen, chewed up, sodden soliloquies,
Oh, we’re sweet nothings anymore

Terrifying best, days of our lives
We’re hanging on the best days of our lives
No two ways about it, best days of our lives
They’re coming right up, if we can just get through this one.

I’ll hang on grab onto your feet
Someone else holds tied to my shoelaces
When their trouser leg tears, runs and stops at the seam to keep us
dangled together
Until help finds us here

I’ll hang on grab onto your feet
Someone else holds tied to my shoelaces
When their trouser leg tears, runs and stops at the seam to keep us
dangled together
Until help finds us here

Best days of our lives
Better be the best days of our lives
Bring on the best days of our lives
Coming right up, woah
Coming right up
If we can just get through this one.

Love Overdose

Suvi challenged me to present the fourth picture of the fourth folder in my picture archives.

Since I archive my digital files by year/date, it wasn't exactly an adventurous task for me. The archives on my HD's start from 2004, everything before that is archived on discs. So, this is how I landed on this picture, titled 'Love Overdose'. It was taken on 21.12.2004.

This was taken at a time when I was starting to experiment with studio flashes. The fact that I could produce high key images made me quite delirious, up to the point where most of the shots from then now look over-exposed to me. Seeing this again, the original tone seemed very blue. So this task prompted me to correct it a bit.

Pleading my time

Sorry for the onslaught of memes. :D I just found a txt file where I had gathered stuff I was supposed to do at some point. I think this one was actually going around on Facebook. Oh well. Not sure if these really make any spooky sense at all. :D

(Just remembered I've done a similar one before a couple of years' ago.)

6 random things

A while back, Susu challenged me to reveal six random things about myself, but I haven't had a chance to get to it before now. Hmm. 6 is quite a substantial number! Somehow 5 would feel like less of a challenge. :D

1. This year it'll be 10 years since I first moved to England. I have no idea where that time has gone. It's petrifying.

2. I don't really drink alcohol anymore. I think I more than consumed my share when I was younger and at some point I just realised that, actually, I really don't like the feeling of being drunk anymore. Occasionally, when the mood is right, I do still get drunk, but it doesn't happen very often at all.

3. I recently saw a very inspiring TV show where Rankin was re-creating famous fashion photographs, from the likes of David Bailey and Cecil Beaton, in his own style. When he was making his own version of a photo by one of my personal icons, Guy Bourdin, I caught myself thinking 'Hmm I would have done that differently'. Followed instantly by a sense of embarrassment over subconsciously criticising the work of one of my favourite photographers. Then I got a bit upset. Because something was suddenly very clear to me. I want to be a photographer. That's what I want to do in life. And I got upset because I've wasted so many years trying to deny it for no apparent reason. One thing's for sure though. I'm not wasting one more minute.

Picture: RANKIN. HOMAGE TO GUY BOURDIN - UNTITLED

4. I'm at my most awake in the evening/at night time. No matter how many hours I sleep I'm always dog tired in the morning.

5. I get lost in my thoughts easily. And also, when I'm concentrating on something I can't really hear or see what's happening around me. People sometimes take that for rudeness.

6. I create too much work for myself. And then complain about it. :P But it does mean that I very rarely get 'bored' (except if it's slow in the office where I can't control my environment, that's soul-destroying), I always have something to do.

Well, there you go... not very riveting things but at least there's 6! :D I think this has done the rounds in all the blogs that I read so I won't pass it on to anyone else...

End of the year survey re:2008

1. What did you do in 2008 that you'd never done before?
Hmm. I can't think of anything! Ack.

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
My resolution for 08 was 'try to be happy'. I think I failed dismally for most of the year, but there were some happy bits I suppose. For this year my resolution is to remember to see the big picture and keep working towards goals that might not be clearly in view just yet.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Yes, there seems to be a baby boom around me again! Elisa gave birth to the gorgeous Hilla, Annis to Jules and, just before Christmas, Mirka had a little xmas princess. There's also more to come very soon.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No. But I did miss people who have passed more than usual last year.

5. What countries did you visit?
What a washout. Just Finland and Sweden.

6. What would you like to have in 2009 that you lacked in 2008?
A plan.

7. What date from 2008 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
25th August. Standing on a cliff top in Cornwall with my two favourite boys in the world.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Finally taking the plunge and starting to charge for my photography. Also, setting up DLB.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not having enough time for friends, family or myself.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Yes, another bad year for illnesses. Seems like I'm down with something constantly. Also had a neck injury which was possibly the most pain I've ever been in.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Camera gear, especially my cute straps from PhatStraps. My darling Wind. Also, concert tickets.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Stu's! (as always :P) Also, couldn't have done half the things I've done without Paul.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

I don't know if there's been a specific person this year. Well maybe, but I'm not mentioning any names.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Camera gear, concert tickets.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Seeing Cat Power, Turin Brakes, Reverend and the Makers, David Gray, Sia, Matchbox Twenty, Joshua Radin, Alanis Morissette (!), Rufus Wainwright, R.E.M., Heather Nova (!), Antony & The Johnsons, Lisa Hannigan and Tracy Chapman play live in concerts. Also saw Simon Amstell and Bill Bailey live, both of whom were very very funny.

16. What songs will always remind you of 2008?
Weirdly, Apulanta - Koneeseen Kadonnut. Sign of an angsty year? :P

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Sadder.
ii. thinner or fatter? Fatter.
iii. richer or poorer? Poorer.

Oh dear.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Socialising, relaxing, loving life, exercising.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?

Wasting time feeling angsty.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

Christmas Eve at home with Stu. Christmas Day and Boxing Day with Stu's family.

21. How did you spend New Years?
Unfortunately, after our lofty Southbank plans with Sooz, I was feeling kind of rough during the day and ended up spending the evening at home with Stu.

22. Did you fall in love in 2008?
Not really. Well, there were those fleeting moments when I was in love with music.

23. How many one night stands?
0.

24. What were your favourite TV programmes?

Heroes, Brothers and Sisters, QI.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't think so.

26. What was the best book you read?
This is going to be embarrassing. Sophie Kinsella - Remember Me? Ooh I read it in one go, was such lovely fluff! :D

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
It's been a very bad year for discovering new artists... just haven't had the time to listen and find as much music as I'd normally do. Lisa Hannigan, CALLmeKAT, Brand New, Santogold, Sophie Zelmani, Tanya Donelly...

28. What did you want and get?
A new job.

29. What did you want and not get?
A new job that would have felt a step forward...

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
The Savages.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Flew to Finland on the actual day and had a lovely BBQ with friends a few days later. I turned 32.

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
The economy not going into a complete meltdown.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2008?
I think with DLB my focus moved a bit away from myself and more towards fashion in general. Personally I still tried to make an effort most of the time, not always so successfully.

34. What kept you sane?
Susanna. Miikka. Music.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Colin.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The end of the world as we know it. Also, Obama, couldn't really avoid that one if you wanted to.

37. Who did you miss?
My nan. Certain people from my previous life.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Layla! What an inspiring ray of light you are.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2008.
If you want to change the direction of your life you have to work hard, things don't just 'happen'.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Tiredness fuels empty thoughts
I find myself disposed
Brightness fills empty space
In search of inspiration
Harder now with higher speed
Washing in on top of me
So I look to my eskimo friend
I look to my eskimo friend
I look to my eskimo friend
When I'm down, down, down.

Rain it wets muddy roads
I find myself exposed
Tapping doors, but irritate
In search of destination
Harder now with higher speed
Washing in on top of me
So I look to my eskimo friend
I look to my eskimo friend
I look to my eskimo friend
When I'm down, down, down.

When I'm down, down, down.
When I'm down, down, down.

Damien Rice - Eskimo

Haastetta pukkaa

Elikkä, haaste kuuluu "Paljastan viisi omituista tapaani. Tämän jälkeen valitsen seuraavat viisi ihmistä, jotka haastan tekemään saman perästä. Heidän tulee myös kirjoittaa nämä säännöt merkintäänsä. Linkitän haastamani ihmiset tämän merkinnän loppuun ja käyn ilmoittamassa heidän kommenttilaatikkoihinsa haasteesta ja tästä merkinnästä."

Jaa-a, mitäköhän omituisia tapoja meikäläisellä sitten mahtaisi olla...

Movers and shakers

Oh man, what a palaver. I finally bit the bullet and changed my hosting company (yes, I have talked about this for years), and of course (mainly because of my own stupidity) I managed to upload old files instead of the most current ones and have now spent a jolly evening trying to sort out what to upload again and what to chuck. Ho hum. I think everything's fixed and working now. Let me know if you spot something funny and I'll have a look.

In the meanwhile, while the blog's been out of action, I received this lovely rose award from Kutri. Thanks very much!

I also received this 'art award' from Bisquits for best photography, for which I'm very honoured! (I later received another one of these from Lehtokotilo, thank you!)

I'd like to pass both of these awards onto couple of my favourite blogs. For gorgeous photography to Kortteja Kaliforniasta, Unikuva and Liivian talossa. And for entertaining me with their hilariously funny and brilliant writing, Dallas Pullaa and Tyttö sinä olet rätti.

Despite the hosting kerfuffle, it has been a pretty good week so far. I've got possible clients lined up, Jenni's coming over on Thursday and we're off to see Antony and the Johnsons on Friday. Yay.

Right, have to try to sort some dinner out now.

My average day in pictures

Saw this challenge here and loved it. The aim is to photograph your daily commute and what you have for breakfast, lunch and dinner. I widened it a bit to include pretty much the whole day. So, here's my 'average day' in pictures.

8am. I leave for work. The street looks fairly quiet. But then again, it always does.

On our station, waiting for my train.

I get a seat, result! First we cross the bridge over to Richmond.

Getting closer and closer to Waterloo (I had more pics from along the way, but this entry was getting waaay too long).

Get off the train. I then walk to the other end of Waterloo station.

1st and 2nd escalator down to Jubilee line.

2nd and 3rd escalator...

I just manage to run into a tube that's ready to leave. Can't get a proper picture as am squished against the wall.

Get off the train at London Bridge. There's two escalators but the other pic was too blurry.

Finally some air!

9am. Our swipey thingy isn't working at the moment so I have to ring the bell to get in.

Can you guess what the official company colour is? :P

Have a muesli bar for breakfast. Suz has left me a note.

It's press day so I'm super busy getting pages through pre-press in the first half of the day.

1.30pm. Meet Layla in the lift, we then wonder where to go for lunch.

I get to treat myself to a tuna melt in Costa, since it's a hectic day and all.

Back to work. There's the view as well. Super.

Layla calls me into a 'very important' meeting in her office. Bump into Hassan in the stairway. Serious business.

John sees a photo op and elbows into our 'very important' meeting.

5pm. I force Layla to walk back to Waterloo with me, since the sun is out.

See, is sunny!

There are those sunflowers again.

Nearly at Waterloo now.

5.30pm. Walk back across Waterloo station again.

I get on Layla's (stupid) train. No seats. I have to change trains at Richmond.

6ish pm. I get off the train and go to the store to get some bits and pieces for dinner tonight.

Almost home, just around the corner.

Nasty spider tries to prevent me from getting to the front door. I showed him!

6.30. Get in and have some water. I see that the sun is just setting so get my SLR out and take a picture for 365 Bokeh.

Start making dinner, but get bored with it so S takes over and cooks me sausage and mash. Is nice. I do the dishes though! I spend some quality time with the sofa and remote.

Have shower, update bloggy things and then head to bed. Where did the evening go?

Meemiä pukkaa

Maurelitalta tupsahti parikin Suomalaisissa blogeissa kierrellyttä meemiä. Laitanpa pitkästä aikaa ihan Suomeksi vastausta. :D Eli kiitos kovasti tästä I Love Your Blog prenikasta, on oikeastaan aikas söpö!

Damien Rice - Baby Sister
En tule varmaan koskaan kyllästymään Damienin ääneen, karismaan, sanoituksiin tai melodioihin. Ehdottomasti karismaattisin artisti jonka olen livenä (noh, Antony Hegarty tulee hyvänä kakkosena) nähnyt. Toivottavasti pääsen vielä osalliseksi mahdollisimman monesta livekonsertista tuleivaisuudessakin...

Antony & the Johnsons - Hope There's Someone
Siinähän olikin mainio aasinsilta Antony & the Johnsons:iin.

Tonic - If You Could Only See

Imogen Heap - Glittering Cloud (The Plague Of Locusts)
Imogenin seuraavaa levyä on saatu odotella jo ihan liian kauan. Jossain vaiheessa saatiin esimakua mahtavan Glitterin Cloud biisin verran, ja heinäkuussa julkaistiin virallisesti Not Now But Soon, toivottavasti lisää on tulossa - ja pian!

Alanis Morissette - Tapes

--

Jaa, kenellekköhän tätä nakkaisi eteenpäin, aika monessa blogissa on nämä meemit varmaan jo kiertäneet. Laitetaan nyt ainakin Susannalle, Jennille, Evelle, Annelle (Hyvää Syntymäpäivää! :D), Marjutille ja Emmielle.

Thanks for the honour + road trippin' video

I got these honours from Eveluna and Emmie, respectively. Thanks very much girls! I think both of these have pretty much done the rounds in most (Finnish) blogs that I read, so I won't pass them on for now. I'm a little bit busy at the moment, getting ready for our first wedding anniversary present to eachother, an R.E.M. concert. I'm not sure whether to take my camera as these are the first tickets I've seen where it says that they categorically refuse entry from people carrying cameras. :| Not sure whether to be a wuss or not...

Oh and I spent most of the morning putting together this little one-day road trip video from Cornwall. If you're not a fan of driving, you might want to pass. :P

Mediameemi

Nakituin tälläseen Maurelitan blogissa.

1. Miten monta blogiviestiä olet kirjoittanut blogiisi?
507.

2. Miksi aloit kirjoittaa omaa blogia nettiin?

3. Millä nettisivuilla käyt, kun olet netissä?
Kotisivunani on Pageflakes jonka kautta seuraan niin blogilistaa kuin muitakin blogeja (tuosta sivupalkista 'blog collections' osastolta löytyy linkit), BBCtä, Hesaria, Iltalehteä, Flickriä yms. Lisäksi käyn silloin tällöin deviantArtissa kääntymässä, katselen suomalaista telkkaria tvkaista.fi:stä, ostelen/myyn juttuja eBayssa, sekä kuuntelen ja löydän musaa last.fm:n kautta.

4. Onko sinulla omaa kotisivua netissä? (Blogia ei lasketa.)
Varsinainen kotisivu on kait tuo mnoo.com, mutta kyllähän minut muualtakin verkosta löytää, sivupalkissa linkkejä.

5. Osaatko puhua muita kieliä kuin äidinkieltäsi? Mitä kieliä?
No englantia on täällä Englannissa vähän pakko. Ruotsia ymmärrän mutta puhumaan en kyllä ihan heti lähtisi. Italiaa luin joskus kesäyliopistossa ja Italiassa ollessa aika paljon ymmärrän, mutta enpä silläkään kielellä kenellekkää juttelemaan asti lähtisi...

6. Mitkä ohjelmat seuraat tv:stä?
Heroes, Brothers & Sisters, Ugly Betty, Californication... Sitten kaikenlaisia huushollin osto/myynti/kunnostusohjelmia, malli/laulu/vaatesuunnittelu/yms-kilpailuja ja muuta hömppää.

7. Hissi vai portaat?
No hissi.

8. Onnen- ja epäonnen numerosi ovat?
Onnenlukuni on 5. Saako sitä paljastaa. Varastaako kaikki sen ny. En oikein tiedä onko sellasta epäonnennumeroa... en mitenkään erityisesti esim. karsasta numeroa 13.

9. Haasta vielä tähän pienimuotoiseen kyselyhaasteeseen 3 bloggaajaa.
Noku kaikki on varmaan tehny jo. No Susanna ja Jenni.

--

Hei kun kerrankin on tällänen suomenkielinen postaus ni laitanpa tähän kuvan ku törmäsin Suvi Koposeen Gapissa.

End of the year survey re:2007

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't think I made any... if I did I probably didn't keep them. Didn't make any other than 'try to be happy' for this year.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
I don't think anyone did last year, how unusual. Lots of people got pregnant though!

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not having enough time for friends and family.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I can't remember a year when I've had a cold as often! The end of the year was just a flu nightmare.

Stu's!

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?

John's.

14. Where did most of your money go?

0.

24. What were your favourite TV programmes?

Heroes.

The Bride Stripped Bare.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Tiger Lou, Basia Bulat, Catherine Feeny...

Went bowling and for a meal out with Stu, Nikki, Ian, Johanna, Pasi and Sooz. I turned 31, yikes.

Susanna. Well, good friends in general.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Colin.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Climate change and the over-hyping of it.

37. Who did you miss?
I especially missed my nan on several occasions last year. This was the second wedding of mine that she didn't see. :(

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Crikey, did I meet any new people?? Oh, Markku! :D

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2007.
You can't fight change.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
"I'm sick and tired of staring into the wall
I wanna do something fucking special and extraordinary
Put your thoughts in a fucking car.....
hit full speed and open your eyes
don't close your eyes
there's a lot of things to do before you die"

Johnossi - A lot of things to do before you die

I'm unique I am

I saw The Quick and Painless ENNEAGRAM Test in Jenni's blog, and since it only involved two questions thought I'd do it too. Here's my result:

Your Enneagram type is FOUR (aka "The Romantic")

"I am unique"

Romantics have sensitive feelings and are warm and perceptive.

How to Get Along with Me

  • Give me plenty of compliments. They mean a lot to me.
  • Be a supportive friend or partner. Help me to learn to love and value myself.
  • Respect me for my special gifts of intuition and vision.
  • Though I don't always want to be cheered up when I'm feeling melancholy, I sometimes like to have someone lighten me up a little.
  • Don't tell me I'm too sensitive or that I'm overreacting!

What I Like About Being a FOUR
  • my ability to find meaning in life and to experience feeling at a deep level
  • my ability to establish warm connections with people
  • admiring what is noble, truthful, and beautiful in life
  • my creativity, intuition, and sense of humor
  • being unique and being seen as unique by others
  • having aesthetic sensibilities
  • being able to easily pick up the feelings of people around me

What's Hard About Being a FOUR
  • experiencing dark moods of emptiness and despair
  • feelings of self-hatred and shame; believing I don't deserve to be loved
  • feeling guilty when I disappoint people
  • feeling hurt or attacked when someone misundertands me
  • expecting too much from myself and life
  • fearing being abandoned
  • obsessing over resentments
  • longing for what I don't have

FOURs as Parents
  • help their children become who they really are
  • support their children's creativity and originality
  • are good at helping their children get in touch with their feelings
  • are sometimes overly critical or overly protective
  • are usually very good with children if not too self-absorbed

Rockin' in the city

Susanna heitti minua monissa blogeissa jo matkanneella rokkaavalla kunnialla.

The weather in London is weird (newsflash). It's rainy and sunny and hot and cold all at the same time. I'm finding it very uncomfortable to sit in the office and pretend like it's business as usual. I'm not very good at pretending in order to fit in or please someone in the first place, and this sort of situation is just uber difficult for me to handle. We're even having an editorial meeting today. My motivation couldn't be lower. To be honest, I couldn't care less about the future of this publication at the moment.

Miten sanoisit - meemi

1. Siskoni punainen mekko mahtuu myös minulle.

Systerin punanen mekko mahtuu myös mulle.

2. Tarvitsetko apua kirjoitustehtävässä, jonka maantiedonopettaja antoi?

Tarviitsä apua kirjotustehtävässä jonka mantsanope anto?

3. Hyvä on, tehdään niin kuin sinä ehdotit.

Okei, tehään niinku sä ehotit.

Busy but tagged

I'm working on writing about the concert, but there's so much other stuff that needs doing this weekend that I can't seem to concentrate long enough to finish it. In the meanwhile, Maurelita tagged me to list eight things about me you'd never dream of knowing. I have a feeling I've done a similar thing in the past. I'm also finding it quite hard to think of that many things that anyone would want to know… But here goes.

1) I own 45 pairs of shoes (and I don't think that's so much!).
2) I hate wearing clothes at home – the smartest you'll find me at home is in my pyjamas.
3) I sing along to the theme tune of C.S.I.
4) I buy way too many useless things on eBay (but also a lot of brilliant finds!)
5) I don't drink much alcohol.
6) I often prefer silence to 'background noise', if I want to listen to music I want to really listen to it.
7) I've rekindled my love for live music again, going to gigs makes me feel more alive.
8) Tickling Stu is the most fun there is (even though I know it's cruel).

I'm supposed to tag 8 more people… I'm not sure that many people even read my blog! Erm. Well, I'll try Susanna, Eve, Marjut, Chris, Kev, Sophie, Hanna and Jenni. In any language you prefer!

Kuolleiden keräilijä

Enpäs ole tehny tälläsiä suomalaisia meemejä paljon, ni repästääs ny oikein...

Eli vastaa kysymyksiin valitsemalla joka kohtaan Wikipedian satunnainen artikkeli.

02. Mitä ottaisit mukaasi autiolle saarelle?
Irlantilaisen tanssin. (En ihan varma ole saisiko sitten esim. ottaa vaikka koko Riverdance porukan, vai olisko kyseessä vaan sellainen oma tanssi omana seurana diili.)

03. Mitä haluaisit häälahjaksi?
Erik Zabelin, joka on saksalainen maantiepyöräilijä. (Jaa-a, oliskohan se sit niinku mun personal trainer vai?)

04. Mitä palvot?
Mirin linnaa Valko-venäjällä. (No mutta onhan se ihan ymmärrettävää.)

05. Salainen fetissisi?
Kharon (muinaiskreikaksi Χάρων), kreikkalaisessa mytologiassa Haadeksen lautturi. (S on vähän kyllästyny pukeutuun siks jo, mutta mua vaan niin kiehtoo kaikki kuolemaan liittyvä.)

06. Mistä näet unta ensi yönä?
Manitoban provinssin lipusta joka pohjautuu Ison-Britannian Red Ensign -lippuun. (Joo-o, en malta odottaa...)

07. Mitä ostaisit, jos sinulla olisi varaa?
Kasvihuoneen. (Aina halunnu! :P)

08. Mistä aiheesta kirjoittaisit kirjan?
Sebastián Ramón de Albero y Añañosista, 1700-luvulla eläneestä espanjalaisesta säveltäjästä. (Lähestyisin enemmän fiktion pohjalta, olisi varmana jymymenestys.)

09. Mitä keräilet?
Vavá:a, oikealta nimeltään Edvaldo Izidio Netoa, joka oli yksi kaikkien aikojen menestyksekkäimistä brasilialaisista jalkapalloilijoista. Kuoli 2002.

10. Mihin paras muistosi liittyy?
Juhani "Tami" Tammiseen. (Kyllä joo, lätkämuistot on mulle kaikkein lähinnä sydäntä. Oi Tami sitä hokkarisi kaarta jäällä!)

11. Turhin tietämäsi asia?
VIA Technologies, taiwanilainen elektroniikkateollisuusyritys. (Minä en paljon piirisarjoista perusta.)

12. Mistä aiheesta puhut kaikkein mieluiten?
MJan Čalounista, tšekkiläisestä jääkiekkoilijasta. (Niinno, tiedätte jo että lätkä on mulle SE juttu.)

13. Minkä asian parissa tulet työskentelmään/työskentelet ammatissasi?
Pump It Upin (PIU), korealaisen Andamiron tuottaman tanssipelisarjan.

14. Mikä saa sinut aina nauramaan?
Lamminpään hautausmaa Tampereella. (Mulla on aina vähän ongelmia pitää pokka hautausmaalla, johtuu kai keräilyharrastuksestani.)

15. Entä itkemään?
Mu, kuvitteellinen kadonnut manner, jonka kerrotaan sijainneen Tyynellä valtamerellä. (Aatelkaa ny, ei sitä oikeesti edes ole. :( Niin surullista.)

16. Mikä oli ensimmäinen asia, jonka näit herätessäsi?
Rudolf Walter Rikhard Heßin, Saksan kansallissosialistisen puolueen varajohtajan.

17. Mitä sinulla on taskuissasi?

Abdul Illah (k. 1958). (Joku voisi luulla että hautausmaaharrastukseni on hiukan riistäytymässä käsistä...)

18. Mikä voisi korvata sinut ilman, että kukaan huomaisi?
Shaft ja orjakauppa (Shaft in Africa), vuonna 1973 julkaistu toimintaelokuva. (No ei siihen paljon tarvittu.)

19. Mitkä olivat ensimmäiset sanasi?
Surbahar, joka on näppäiltävä kielisoitin. (Äiti ei reagoinut mitenkään. Olisikohan aikaisessa iässä aloitettu surbahar harrastus pelastanut minut aikuisiän kuolemafetissiltä.)

20. Minkä kanssa sinut tullaan hautaamaan?
Pyhän Jaakobin katedraalin (kroatiaksi Katedrala svetog Jakova), joka on Kroatian katolisen kirkon katedraali Šibenikissä. (Jaa-a, jokseenkin ison kuopan saavat kaivaa, mutta ehkä sitten mahdutaan kaikki sinne, minä Adbul ja Edvaldo ym.)

21. Mitä sinulla on piilossa yöpöytäsi laatikossa?
Lincoln (auto). (No sellanen pieni vaan.)

22. Mitä rakastat eniten maailmassa?
Honiaran kansainvälistä lentokenttää (IATA: HIR, ICAO: AGGH), joka on Salomonsaarten ainoa kansainvälinen lentoasema. (Se on vaan niin ihana!)

23. Mistä aiheesta tekisit kappaleen euroviisuihin?
Suvelasta, 1970-luvulla rakennetusta korkeiden tasakattoisten kerrostalojen lähiöstä Espoon keskuksessa. (No vedin siellä ekat kännit ni siitä se inspis lähti... kyllä sellainen rehellinen suomikuva iskis maailmalla.)

24. Mitä näet tällä hetkellä ikkunasta?
Saab 92n, ensimmäisen sarjavalmisteinen SAABin valmistaman henkilöautomallin. (On se vaan nätti, vaikka on kaihtimetkin kiinni.)

25. Mikä sinä todella olet?
Olen sisimmiltäni Desmoteplaasi. Se on liuotushoidossa käytettävä valmiste jota käytetään verihyytymien hoidossa. (Ja nyt mä liukenen paikalta...)

11 things

The rules:

* List 11 things you want to say to 11 different people.

* Don't say who they pertain to.

* Feel free to comment, but don't confirm or answer anything.

* Never discuss it again.

1) I'm glad you're back in my life. You're unique and you have a way with words which I enjoy. At your best you're open and loving and show me how important it is to be direct with people. You show me new ways to look at the world. But you can also be very judgmental and act in a way that indicates that you're in some ways 'better' than anyone, which sometimes makes me feel anxious. I admire your strength and attitude at the face of adversity and yet I wonder how a person as brilliant as you has made some of the decisions you have. I want to either to protect you or bask in your warm glow.

2) You are difficult and you get under my skin. I find it hard to be objective about anything you say because we have been through a lot and know each other too well. I hate the way I can see some of your more negative qualities in myself no matter how actively I fight against them. You can be at the same time one of the most narrow-minded and one of the most open-minded people I know, and this contradiction will forever confuse me. You can be the funniest and the most embarrassing person I know. I wouldn't be anything without you and I wish I could express my love for you without any negative baggage clouding our communication.

3) You don't make it easy for me to express myself to you. I've looked up to you for so long that I find it hard to relate to you as an adult. You've let me down so many times but I've come to accept that you are just human. I love your sense of humor but I don't like the way you undermine people sometimes. You have a gentle way about you which I've always loved, but you can also be judgmental. Actually, you're probably the person who has made me weary of people with strong beliefs. You didn't handle explaining the 100% change of your belief system to me, when I was young and confused, very well. I hate the way you make me feel guilty for not being in touch more, when you could sometimes be the active party in our relationship. I hope you know how much I love you.

4) I wish we saw each other more often. I love the way you're embracing your current life situation and I am very happy for you. And also jealous of your seemingly perfect world. I think jealousy has always been a slight undercurrent in our relationship and ever since we were young we've felt jealous about some of the things or qualities the other one possesses, even though this has never been expressed on a conscious level. You mean the world to me and I hope you will always be a part of my life.

5) I wish you didn't make life so difficult for yourself. You are a brilliant, intelligent, funny and sensitive person, but it seems like you're looking at yourself through a skewed mirror. I hope you could relax into the wonderful person that you are instead of constantly trying be something else. You've shown me that some things are worth fighting for and that people can actively better themselves. You are full of surprises - both gloriously positive and fiercely negative - but all the same, you make life interesting. Sometimes you break my heart but I will always love you.

6) I'd like to have a good relationship with you but sometimes you make it so difficult. You are so egocentric (even more so than I!) that it can feel like you're sucking the life out of around yourself. You're very needy and yet you don't give people much space. You make bold decisions which I admire, but I wish you could stand behind them more proudly. I don't know why I always get the feeling that you're jealous of me somehow, even though there's no reason to be. You are beautiful and strong. I hope we could have a nice, relaxed friendship.

7) You are my rock. We couldn't be more different, yet you are always the one constant in my life. I can always count on you and I know you'd do pretty much anything in your power for me (on a good day), and I assure you I would do the same for you. Our opinions are often opposite and yet we can see eye to eye. I think you are one of the rare people who see that me being controlling or demanding is my fucked up way of acknowledging people who are very close to me. So it's actually an honor to be bullied by me! :P I will always love you (like a brother).

8) I am so grateful that you came into my life. I've never before had a relationship that was so equal and rewarding. I think we both intuitively give and receive the same amount. This is probably how friendships should always be but I've never experienced it on this level before. There's always either guilt or someone trying too hard or giving too little. At least I hope you experience it the same way, and that you don't feel like I'm too demanding. I love the way I can be myself with you and not have to worry about you judging me. You make me laugh and bring such positive energy to my life. I am surprised at how fast you have become one the most important people in my life.

9) You confuse me. I'm glad I got to know you because you are unlike anyone else I know. Your views fascinate me and often perplex me. You are quite difficult to get a handle on, sometimes you're hot and sometimes you're cold. Sometimes you intimidate me and sometimes you annoy me. Sometimes the way your head works drains my energy. There's no doubt about it though, you definitely enrich my life and I'm very happy to know you.

10) We've had a lot of fresh starts and I've always felt excited about each of them. I hope this time around it lasts without anything between us going sour. I think now we're old enough to savor the good aspects of our friendship and not let the negatives become too big obstacles. We've both always been quite strong characters and I've often been the one that who finds themselves bending. I don't see this changing anytime soon, but I think I'm more comfortable with that fact this time around. We feed off of each others creativity and ambition and I hope we can achieve great things together.

11) You two have been there when I grew into the person I am now. Even though we've drifted apart I will always consider you my best friends. It makes me sad that all we have in common now is our past, but I'm positive that there will once again be a cycle that will bring us closer together. It requires a change of dynamics somewhere down the line though. As long as our relationships bring negativity to my life I will stay distant. I love seeing you in small doses and you will always have a place in my heart.

More tests

Another personality test found via Susie. Although, this one wasn't really very indepth in any sense of the word. And I have a feeling I've done it before... hmm.

Your Five Factor Personality Profile

Extroversion:

You have medium extroversion.

You're not the life of the party, but you do show up for the party.

Sometimes you are full of energy and open to new social experiences.

But you also need to hibernate and enjoy your "down time."

Conscientiousness:

You have medium conscientiousness.

You're generally good at balancing work and play.

When you need to buckle down, you can usually get tasks done.

But you've been known to goof off when you know you can get away with it.

Agreeableness:

You have medium agreeableness.

You're generally a friendly and trusting person.

But you also have a healthy dose of cynicism.

You get along well with others, as long as they play fair.

Neuroticism:

You have high neuroticism.

It's easy for you to feel shaken, worried, or depressed.

You often worry, and your worries prevent you from living life fully.

You tend to be emotionally reactive and moody. Your either flying very high or feeling very low.

Openness to experience:

Your openness to new experiences is medium.

You are generally broad minded when it come to new things.

But if something crosses a moral line, there's no way you'll approve of it.

You are suspicious of anything too wacky, though you do still consider creativity a virtue.

Personal DNA

Susanna pointed this cool personality test out to me. It definitely felt like one of the more comprehensive ones out of the tests that I've done. Apparently I'm a reserved creator. How about that then. :D Here's my full personal DNA report.

The colour strip shows my different (and mostly unflattering :|) qualities, you can see them when you hover over the different colours.

Oh dear here we go again

Anyone remember TheSpark? And the way we were all so addicted to those damn tests and SparkMatch etc. back in the day. :P Well, as it happens, the guys behind TheSpark have moved on with OKCupid (yes it's been around for a while but I haven't managed to stumble upon it before), which works in pretty much the same way but seems bigger and better and shinier. Here's hoping I won't get completely hooked again... to the tests I mean, it's not like I need a matching service! :P But for old times sake I did have to take the dating type test though. Of course I don't have to agree with the results do I... :|

Underappreciated
The Battleaxe
Deliberate Brutal Love Master (DBLMf)

Sharp. Hardened. Dominating. The Battleaxe sweeps all before her, smiting and what not.

You've had a number of serious relationships, so you obviously have many attractive qualities. You're well experienced in dealing with other people's weirdnesses, and it's likely you're good in bed by now, too. Also, like the drunken housewife chucking Heinekens at her no-good husband, you've got a lot of energy.

People can tell you're sophisticated, and so you find yourself the object of infatuations quite often. But it's how you handle yourself in your relationships that gets you the 'brutal' tag. Controlling? Imperious? Overbearing? Yes, please.

Your exact opposite:
The Nurse

Random Gentle Sex Dreamer
Remarkably, you don't mind the same from your men. You've experience enough to take whatever you dish out. Overall, you're a very good person and a capable lover, and when the time comes you'll make a fine divorcee.

ALWAYS AVOID: The Poolboy

CONSIDER: The False Messiah, someone just like you.

I am happy every hour

Let's hammer that camwhoring point home with some force. :D lol. Sorry I couldn't resist. And no! I'm not naked you perverts. :|

I can't believe it's friday again. I don't have any recollection of last week. It was monday... then swoosh, here we are. And next week it's England time again. Help.

Oh, by the way, I finally watched Narnia yesterday. And I was so very dissapointed. :( It just didn't... work. At all. Probably mainly because the children were so very ANNOYING, not to mention the worst actors ever. It's not often you can say that you prefer the acting skills of a cgi beaver to the actual people in the film. Humm. Some bits looked good, like Aslan. But on the whole it was just all sort of off. And did I mention the ANNOYING children.

Going to watch Closer tonight, another one that I haven't gotten around to earlier. Will report back later.

I discovered Orenda Fink last night, thanks to Pandora and I must say she is wonderful. <3 I'm really in the mood for melancholic music lately and she fits in perfectly.

Umm did this test just now. Err. Right then.

What is your sexual style?

You scored as Violent. You are violent. To you there is nothing better than a good spank. You like scratching and biting 'cause that's what people are for.

Love test thing

How You Are In Love

You take a while to fall in love with someone. Trust takes time.

You tend to give more than take in relationships.

You need your space and privacy. You don't like to be smothered.

You love your partner unconditionally and don't try to make them change.

You stay in love for a long time, even if you aren't loved back. When you fall, you fall hard.

Welcome 2005

Once more we're at the start of a new year. They seem to come around a lot faster with each passing year.... Strange that. While I start this year with optimism, the festive spirit is somewhat dampened by the horrible catastrophe and the way it effects so many people around the world. Just in Finland, there are around 300 people missing and presumed dead, which in the big scale of things isn't a lot, but in a country with as small a population as this, is a massive amount. Many empty desks at schools. Many people trying to make sense of what happened. I can only image how devastating things must be at the heart of the devastation. :(

One thing that these current events provide is the sense of perspective. I feel so lucky to be alive and adamant to appreciate everything I have in life. Sometimes it's easy to forget how lucky most of us actually are. Even if worries and problems can't be measured on any scale, in the big picture of things I should be quite happy with my life.

Last night we celebrated New Year's Eve with Stu, Eve and Teuxi. Eve and I were mainly taking pictures of the fireworks on the balcony, while the boys drank themselves silly. Stu managed to get bitten by Nippu and is now complaining that he's missing a finger, although I reckon that's a bit of an exaggeration (it does look pretty nasty however). Anyways, the Eve was quite low-key, which was perfect by me. Feeling very dizzy now for some reason, even though I didn't really drink that much or anything.

OMG Colin Farrell on telly. Drool. Without a shirt. <3 Who knew the Dicovery Channel could be this entertaining...

In 2004
- I got my first digital SLR
- I painted the bedroom wall purple
- I went cruising to Stockholm 3 times
- My best friend had her first baby
- Another close friend got pregnant (can we see a pattern here?)
- I spent my birthday week in Italy
- I celebrated my 5-year anniversary with Stu
- I traveled to England for work 11 times
- A close friend moved back to Finland after 5 years abroad
- I shot a lot of pictures

In 2005
- I will shoot a lot more, with the aid of my new flashes
- I'll hopefully decide whether to leave my job or not
- I can't wait to see my friend's baby in six months time
- I hope my life moves forward somehow
- I wish I'll manage to live healthier
- I hope to travel less for work and more for pleasure

I'm not doing resolutions this year, just wishes... They seem somehow gentler. :D

Happy 2005 everyone!

Another friday gone

I got this sudden urge to update the main site last night. I just thought the categories weren't that logical and saying what I wanted to say with the pictures in them. I found out that it's amazingly difficult to come up with names for categories. :| When something's not really a portrait, doesn't really have a concept, isn't really fashion... erm. A proper pain in the ass. Well I'm more or less pleased with the categorisation now. I also added titles to pictures in two sections as I think they do go hand in hand with certain kind of photography. Not sure if I'm going to add titles to still and stree/nature sections... they're quite self explanatory really.

Lots of love and thankyous to Paul again. He's the best webmaster a girl could have. <3

Another huge task I finally finished was compiling a list of inspiring links to photography sites. It took me until 4am to get it done. But at least it's up now and it will be easy to add to it in the future. If you want to look for inspiration from photographers do take a look. Especially if you're into fashion photography. And if you have any cool links, tell me and I'll add them. :)

I can't help but utter the inevitable words... it's friday - again. :| What the bloody hell is up with time. Sorry for sounding like a broken record. Umm. Oh well, at least I got to make pizza again. =P

Are you people keeping up with my posting? :)

Anyways, I now (after a lot of pestering) took the classic IQ test. I've always dreaded these things, as I'm for some reason very confident in the knowledge that everyone else is lot more intelligent than me. Well, it wasn't as bad as I thought... although let's not talk about the mathematical questions eh. Here's what I got.

Your IQ score is 129

Your Intellectual Type is Word Warrior. This means you have exceptional verbal skills. You can easily make sense of complex issues and take an unusually creative approach to solving problems. Your strengths also make you a visionary. Even without trying you're able to come up with lots of new and creative ideas.

Third entry today. How about that huh? :D

Well, this is just a follow up on my thoughts on the personality test. I have a tendency to react with my gut quite swiftly, I guess this is where the F and the J come into play...

Ok so yes, after reading the profile I was quite moved about how deeply it seemed to fit. And I still think there are some really spooky things in there. But of course this is not a result of anyone really analysing me, apart from myself. Obviously, as I answered all of these questions myself, from the knowledge I have of myself, the result is really just my projected self-image. Which is why it felt like looking in the mirror. But I'm not really sure that it needs to be anything more than that. Having never gone to therapy or anything like that, I am pretty much the only person to analyze my own thoughts and to some extent my behaviour. And having these things I know about myself written down in such an concise form, makes them really hit home.

Anyways, I'm glad it has provoked conversation and also made me look at myself more critically (and also more acceptingly in some regards), as well as provided a (fun) foundation for me and some of my friends (namely you Riina) to analyze ourselves. And also perhaps share insight into each other.

Did some more reading on the personality types and found this site, which had some pretty indepth profiles. Reading my own actually choked me a bit. So ok... I think the test was pretty darn accurate then. It's a bit spooky how all these facets of my personality, which I thought were unique to me, can be categorized like so. Are we so easily divided into groups? It seems such a strange thing, that all of us humans and our personal motivations and feelings could be mapped out like that. Does it mean that we're not actually that complex? That everything is sort of pre-programmed into our psyche? Uhh I don't know, but those people who wrote that profile sure as hell knew things about me I thought no-one did. Confusing.

Next, I so want to do the compability test. This is probably not a wise move. :D

Just to divert your attention away from snuffers and urinals I shall give you the opportunity to find out your Hobbit and Elf names. My Hobbit name is apparently Tigerlily Brandybuck of Buckland and my Elf name Tári of Dorthonion, which I quite like.... I wonder if anyone's waiting for the last LOTR as eagerly as I am. Well, maybe that bloke who went to the last one in a Gandalf outfit.

Well, I went to take the Drink-o-Meter test because Jo Whiley told me to. Apparently I'm Chelsea Clinton (not sure if I'm pleased about that really), and have consumed 2106 drinks in my life and spent £8424 (€12 244) on them. With this money I could have bought 0.08 ferraris. So, I think it's safe to say I don't have a problem with alcohol (*glares* at certain people).

However, I'm extremely intrested to see how much money Miikka has spent on booze in his life. Dare you to go and find out. :D
