Hurrah for traditions

It has become a bit of a tradition that every January Miikka comes over for a ‘working holiday’ of sorts, mostly consisting of some jobs that need doing around the house, drinking beer (him), ignoring emails (me), and catching up with the previous season of True Blood. He just flew back home today and the house already feels a bit empty without the regular sound of a bag of crisps being ripped open. Oh well, next year will come around soon enough, in fact, it seems like it comes around quicker and quicker the older we get…

Award-winning…

So it happened that I won an award for doing my job. How weird is that? I wrote a bit more about the whole thing over at MTP, if you’re interested in my pre-gala jitters.

What I enjoyed most about the day was getting ready for the do with the lovely Emma.

End of year survey re : 2011

1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?
Some, erm, gardening (kind of). Birmingham.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
For 2011 my resolutions were to ‘build on what ever success I achieved in 2010, but also work on getting the balance in my life right. To have more time for family and friends. To take better care of myself. And to properly ENJOY the ride.’

I think I achieved the first bit with bells on, the latter part, not so much, although it is a work in progress… So my resolutions for 2012 are to get closer to that balance thing, socialise more, get into better shape, and fingers crossed sleep more.

You can’t please everyone.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
I was a heavy heart to carry
My beloved was weighed down
My arms around his neck
My fingers laced to crown.

I was a heavy heart to carry
My feet dragged across ground
And he took me to the river
Where he slowly let me drown

My love has concrete feet
My love’s an iron ball
Wrapped around your ankles
Over the waterfall

I’m so heavy, heavy
Heavy in your arms
I’m so heavy, heavy
Heavy in your arms

And is it worth the wait
All this killing time?
Are you strong enough to stand
Protecting both your heart and mine?

Who is the betrayer?
Who’s the killer in the crowd?
The one who creeps in corridors
And doesn’t make a sound

My love has concrete feet
My love’s an iron ball
Wrapped around your ankles
Over the waterfall

My love has concrete feet
My love’s an iron ball
Wrapped around your ankles
Over the waterfall

This will be my last confession
I love you never felt like any blessing
Whispering like it’s a secret
Only to condemn the one who hears it
With a heavy heart

Heavy heavy i’m so heavy in your arms
(i’m so) Heavy heavy i’m so heavy in your arms
(i’m so) Heavy heavy i’m so heavy in your arms
(i’m so) Heavy heavy i’m so heavy in your arms

I was a heavy heart to carry
my beloved was weighed down
My arms around his neck
My fingers laced to crown

I was a heavy heart to carry
But he never let me down
When he had me in his arms
My feet never touched the ground

I’m so heavy, heavy in your arms.

Christmas of ups and downs

Christmas was all about ups and downs. Mum and Pauli were over and there was presents galore. But Stu’s nan went into hospital the day before Christmas, which was a bit of a shock to the system. So it was all about balancing the good with the bad and sorting out logistics between us and Essex. There were some Christmassy moments to be had though, especially in the run up to the actual celebrations.

Venice in November

I’m cross-posting these images from the MTP blog as surely personal images need to be on my personal blog eh? From our trip to Venice in November.

Cameras used: Holga, an Ikoflex TLR (operations of which the eBay seller described as ‘esoteric’, and he wasn’t far off!), Polaroid Spirit and of course my iPhone.

Enjoy!

First time in Birmingham

For Stu’s birthday this year I really splashed out and took him up to Birmingham. No, but really, it was all good. We stayed at a cool hotel with an amazing view (apparently of the ‘Aids tower’), got to see Emma perform in The Lost Happy Endings (she was amazing) and spend some quality time with her, Pete and Jo. Definitely a brilliant trip. And Stu even got to see Ikea Birmingman on his birthday, how lucky is he.

Birthday picnic

I had the most amazing birthday picnic to celebrate my 35th. So much fun was had. Steph arranged the prettiest flowers, everyone brought food (Emma even baked her first ever cake, well, brownies, for me!), and I received lots of amazing presents and pretty cards + so much bubbly that it’s going to take quite a while to get through it all. What a lovely, lovely day!

Finland in the summer

I had a few days off in Finland around shooting a Finnish wedding for a change. We got to spend some time at Miikka’s cabin, which was long overdue. I also got to hang out with Ed, who was also in Finland for a wedding, and show him places from my youth. Good times.

How time flies…

This is one of those things that makes one feel terribly old… It had clearly been waaaaay too long since I’d seen Noa & Elli, as they are practially all grown up now! It seems like just a few winks ago that Elli was just a few months old. Crazy. But still, was so lovely seeing them, and Riina, it was a lucky thing I had a wedding just around the corner!

Working holiday

Miikka was over for his traditional ‘working holiday’. There was a lot of drilling and laying of floors involved, but we did manage to squeeze in some culture at Hampton Court Palace and two seasons of True Blood. Not bad going.

End of year survey re: 2010

London New Year 2011

1. What did you do in 2010 that you’d never done before?
Bought property in the UK.

2. Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
My resolution for 2010 was tohave the strength push towards taking the final steps into a more emancipated way of living, and once you get there, remember to enjoy what you’ve achieved, but never stop working towards being better/happier/closer to where you want to be. I definitely achieved the emancipation, no doubt about that. I haven’t really had time to enjoy it all yet though, it’s been such a whirlwind of a year. Very very satisfying, but hard work none the less. For 2011 my resolution is to build on what ever success I achieved in 2010, but also work on getting the balance in my life right. To have more time for family and friends. To take better care of myself. And to properly ENJOY the ride.

3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Seems like everyone is on their 4th round already. 2010 was the year where I completely lost the plot on what’s happening in ‘normal life’.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
No.

5. What countries did you visit?
France, Finland and ALL over the UK.

6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?
Some downtime with friends.

7. What date from 2010 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
12th of August when we finally completed on our new flat. It was a long road, but it was such a relief to finally be able to step through our own front door.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?

Finally resigning from the ‘day job’ and becoming a  full-time photographer.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Not being able to balance work and life.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I had an accident in May where I pulled the ligaments in my ankle. This having happened right at the beginning of the busiest wedding season meant that I had to work through some horrid pain over the summer.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
A home.

12. Whose behaviour merited celebration?
Susanna continued to be a rock. I also am very appreciative of all the support I’ve gotten from Stu this year, it never goes unnoticed even if I don’t always remember to express my gratitude.

13. Whose behaviour made you appalled and depressed?

I think I’ve grown a pretty thick skin this year as a result of having to deal with customer service. Not many things affect me negatively any more, but sometimes lack of respect can sting.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Home, home, home. Can you say ‘money pit’.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Jesh de Rox Life {as an artform} workshop. My new floor. Seeing Imogen Heap live – twice.

16. What songs will always remind you of 2010?
Citizen Cope – Fame.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Happier x 1000.
ii. thinner or fatter? Fatter.
iii. richer or poorer? Richer.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Sleeping, socialising, relaxing, loving life, exercising. (No change from last year there!)

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?

Over-delivering.

20. How did you spend Christmas?

Christmas Eve at home with Stu. Boxing Day with Stu’s family.

21. How did you spend New Years?
At home surrounded by boxes of office stuff while S stripped wallpaper.

22. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Possibly fell more in love with witnessing love.

23. How many one night stands?
0.

24. What were your favourite TV programmes?

Good Wife, True Blood, Vampire *cough* Diaries.

25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I’ve been disillusioned with a lot of people.

26. What was the best book you read?
Emma Donoghue – Room. So so good.

27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Really should make more of an effort with new music… Sebastien Schuller, Rebekka Karijord, Florence + the Machine.

28. What did you want and get?
Work for myself successfully. Grey walls and wooden floor in my own home.

29. What did you want and not get?
iPad.

30. What was your favourite film of this year?
Inception.

31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Woke up in a little room in a Chateau in rural France after having photographed Alix & Manu’s wedding the previous day. Spent the rest of the day on a scary trip home. Turned 34 (which looks completely insane in black and white).

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Lack of pain.

33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Pyjamas vs. black.

34. What kept you sane?
Succeeding. Which proved I wasn’t insane to attempt it.

35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Colin.

36. What political issue stirred you the most?
Burn a Koran Day man. Although ‘stirred’ is a bit strong. Wikileaks.

37. Who did you miss?
Everyone. Especially Miikka.

38. Who was the best new person you met?

Maz and the girls from WWJD camp. Rosie. Lots of lovely people I’ve got to know through Twitter. And so many awesome clients.

39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010.
Be authentic and it will resonate with the right people.

40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year.
Your love is better than ice cream
Better than anything else that I’ve tried
And your love is better than ice cream
Everyone here know how to fight

And it’s a long way down
It’s a long way down
It’s a long way down to the place
Where we started from

Your love is better than chocolate
Better than anything else that
I’ve tried
Oh love is better than chocolate
Everyone here knows how to cry

It’s a long way down
It’s a long way down
It’s a long way down to the place
Where we started from..

Merry Christmas!

I couldn’t very well let the whole year slip by without even wishing you all a very Happy Christmas!

I’m not gonna do the whole apologising for my absence thing, the best I can do is to promise to try to have a bit more time for myself, my personal photography, and this blog next year. Over the holidays I’m hoping to finally dig up some personal images that I’ve completely neglected to even get off cards, much less blog, as I’ve been so busy all year. That’s a start right?

Escaping the snow

While the rest of the country was battling with the biggest snowstorms in recent history, we escaped to the south, to Lizard Point in Cornwall. We spent a couple of blisfully sunny days being the only customers in a hotel we always wanted to stay in (which was a bit spooky actually). We did get to experience enough snow drama on the long drive home, mind…
